The Missing Mix

Why the missing mix? Why, because I was missing! On this particular Friday I had abandoned my co-workers for an Arts conference, and so in my absence they decided that "missing" would be my inspiration for the week. At first it seemed daunting, then I realized that there were lots of songs about missing people, then I remembered that I don't like those songs, then I struggled. In the beginning I came up with a lot of goofy rap songs ("I missed the Bus", I Left my Wallet in El Segundo", "Tune From the Missing Channel"), but when I heard Chris Clark's song "Absence", I knew I needed to find songs that complemented this amazing track. It wasn't until the night before that I realized I could use untitled tracks because they were missing titles, and so the mix was beefed up with a classic song from Gas' Pop album, and some dancefloor glitch from Saskatoon (Knar).
This is a much warmer electronic mix than the Silence mix of two rotations back, mainly because most of these characters are using real instrumentation as their source (even Oval now!). This is also the first mix where every track came from my existing collection (with the exception of the Clark track):

01 Marc Bolan - Untitled Poem
02 Fennesz - Herbert Missing
03 Odd Nosdam - Untitled One
04 Piano Overlord - You stole my stereo outro
05 Dylan Group - An Indolent Appreciation of What You Left Behind
06 Secret Mommy - Surgery (Medieval Rural Denture Rmx) by Piers Whyte
07 Knar - untitled (knar’s pop quiz theme)
08 Christopher Willits - order (no blueprint)
09 Oval - Emocor
10 blunderspublik - glimse
11 F.S. Blumm - Ohne Orte
12 Savath y Savalas - Untitled
13 The Books - Motherless Bastard
14 Clark - Absence
15 Gas - Untitled #01
16 Tujiko Noriko - Endless End

I Don't MIND GAMES

I never liked playing Mastermind, because I always lost.
I like playing 20 Questions, although I quickly get bored.
I won't play chess because I get too impatient to stick to any strategy.
Do I Like Mind Games? Yes, I do. And I hope you do too.

The White Out Mix

In honour of the first snowfall (although I don't know if I agree that such an event should be honoured) I was given the theme "whiteout". It turned out to be a doozey! (Both the first snow and the mix!) Thematically, I went with songs that deal with snowy or cold subject matter, or have a tie in to snow and cold in some way. In addition, I added some tracks that deal with the colour white. So, although I'm sure no one was really excited about the first snow fall, I hope that listening to this mix (perhaps while curled up in front of a blazing fire while sipping a brandy or maybe just stuck in your car on your way to work with the heat cranked up) will help keep you warm!

The Whiteout Mix

1. Take Off - Bob and Doug McKenzie (with Geddy Lee)
2. White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
3. A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum
4. A Hazy Shade of Winter - Simon & Garfunkel
5. White Room - Cream
6. White Wedding - Billy Idol
7. Play that Funky Music (White Boy) - Wild Cherry
8. Snow (Hey Oh) - Red Hot Chili Peppers
9. Girl with a Problem - The Northern Pikes

Hot & Cold

Because I received a double theme this week, I decided to split my mix into a Hot side and a Cold side...and as if that wasn't limiting enough, I added the restriction that each side would feature the same artists. I was inspired by the realization that The Cure have a lot of hot and cold themed songs. Here's what I came up with:

I was also motivated by a complaint that a co-carpooler made last year that I had "forgotten my roots" - meaning that I wasn't putting much electronic music in my mixes, so this mix is predominantly electronic, and occasionally peppered with guitars. I had to throw Witchypoo into the mix because it was the first song I thought of when I heard the theme, and I love anything Sid and Marty Krofft.

This one's also mixed - enjoy!

Tricks or Treats!!

Hey all.

I was given the honour of creating the Halloween themed mix this year. (I think mostly because it was my turn during the week of Halloween) For this mix I decided that I would pick songs that were either tricks or treats. Some may even play tricks with your mind. Also, I picked some songs that were by some "creepy" type artists. To top it all off I book-ended the mix with a couple of Scary Soundtrack items. I hope you enjoy!

P.S. the image in the cover is my pumpkin from this year. It took a long time to carve that...

1. Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr.
2. Sweet Jane - The Velvet Underground
3. Candy Store Rock - Led Zeppelin
4. Surrender - Cheap Trick
5. The Garden - Guns N' Roses
6. Welcome to my Nightmare - Alice Cooper

Feeling Thankful

As a way to ring in the Thanksgiving long weekend, I took on the challenge of creating a mix in which I displayed thankfulness. This undertaking turned out to be a bit more difficult than I had expected, but thankfully I am very happy with the final results. I did manage to blend in two guilty pleasures from my youth, and my challenge to you will be to spot them.

So, for your listening pleasure...

Thankfulness

1. Thank You - Duran Duran (cover)
2. I Will Be Grateful for This Day - Bright Eyes
3. Thanks A Lot - Third Eye Blind
4. Thank You For Your Love - Antony and the Johnsons

The Sounds of Silence

I was given the theme of "silence" after having almost lost my voice the week previous. For some reason I still tried to teach, making for a lot of giggling teens and much less productivity.
This is probably my most musically diverse mix, but to compensate this is my first mix that is MIXED; i.e. cross-faded. I'm pretty proud of the result. So set your player to "gapless", sit back, and enjoy the cacophony that is SILENCE.

p.s. I couldn't resist taking the piss a bit by performing John Cage's classic 4'33" at my computer while burning the CD.

01] First Moog Quartet - Sounds of Silence
02] White Noise - Love Without Sound
03] Carlos Futura - Sounds of Silence
04] Phase Terminale - The Silence of Glass
05] Hirokazu Tanaka - Silence
06] Family Fodder - Silence
07] Belle and Sebastian - Nothing in the Silence
08] The Gaylads - Sounds of Silence
09] Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Envelopes Another Day
10] Alan Feanch - Stay Silent
11] El Tarro de Mostaza - El Ruido del Silencio
12] Flying Saucer Attack - For Silence

Sugar & Spice & Everything Nice!

Hello! I'm very excited to have been invited to participate in this year's Carpool Challenge. Being a bit of a self-professed music snob, this will prove to be both a fun and difficult undertaking. The theme of my first mix came about as a direct result - I assume - of my personality: I'm sweet, pack a punch, but deep down am just plain nice. Right gents?

While putting this mix together, I discovered that I have quite an affinity for both female lead vocalists and strings. I'm not sure what that says about me, but I'm sure there are some deep, dark, Freudian implications.

I am truly humbled to have my mix(s) become a part of this entertaining tradition. So, here it goes, the first mix of the 2010-2011 school year.

Sugar & Spice & Everything Nice

1. Raw Sugar - Metric
2. Sugar and Spice - Basia Bulat

The Bird Mix

So, after watching a pretty terrible movie trailer on the previous Friday for a movie called "Birdemic" (click the link to watch the trailer if you want to waste 2 minutes of your life that you will never get back) that everyone else thought was pretty hilarious, I was given the theme Birds. I can't say that I was terribly impressed with this theme at first, but that's the name of the game I guess. I did my best and I feel that the final product is not too bad. I really had to search to fill this one and didn't have an awful lot of extra tracks at my disposal. (without resorting to "snowbird" by Anne Murray) So, flip this mix on, and give it a try.

1. Fly like an Eagle - The Steve Miller Band
2. And your Bird can Sing - The Beatles
3. Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything there is a Season) - The Byrds
4. Heart full of Soul - The Yardbirds
5. Learning to Fly - Pink Floyd

Summer update

Hello loyal fans,

You may have already guessed that we carpoolers are carpooling to a school, which is why there hasn't been a mix since the end of June. If you are reading this and are NOT a teacher, you should consider changing professions.
As a result of my heat-induced lethargy, I just noticed that my mediafile links are dead, so if you run across this blog and are interested in any of the mixes, just ask us to "re-up" the files in the comments section, and we will gladly do that with all of this spare time that we are burdened with.
We are also losing a carpool member in the fall, but we may be adding a female perspective, so stay tuned!

See you in september!

Let's hope it's an Endless Summer mix

So, for the final installment of the inaugural season I was given Summer as my theme. Surprisingly, this was a more difficult mix to put together than the other two. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome of this mix although, I'm a little biased and I did include a few tracks that I could only qualify as being self indulgent. However, you also can't have a Summer picnic without a little Cheese whiz. Let me just close by saying that it has been fun, and I look forward to continuing the great carpool challenge in the fall. Thanks to my other carpoolies for their efforts as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the mixes! I hope you've all enjoyed mine as well. Enjoy the Summer!

NUMBERS

Last installment of the GCC for me. It was a lot of fun finding tracks about numbers. I wanted to take the mix in a totally different direction focusing on telephone numbers but choose to scrap it for "flow" and "emotion" which is a common element in my mixes.

Punishment

The theme of punishment was foisted upon me thanks to my cockiness and constant assertion that the mixes were in fact some sort of contest (which I, of course, was winning).
I could have taken it in several directions. I COULD have lived by the rule that "turnabout is fair play" and made a mix of punishing tracks by Ryoji Ikeda, Maryanne Amacher, Masonna, Merzbow, Aube, etc. ...and everyone would have vetoed it (except maybe Colourways). I COULD have made a mix of punishing black, doom, speed, or grindcore metal...and everyone would have hated it. So, I made a mix of happier songs that deal with punishment of some form. Admittedly, it does get dark at the end, but I couldn't resist adding some trad folk, even if it doesn't make for good morning carpool listening. As it turns out, some of my favourite songs of late are on this mix.
INTRO
01] HAPPY CATS - DESTROY THAT BOY
02] THE BEATLES - RUN FOR YOUR LIFE
03] KASENETZ-KATZ SINGING ORCHESTRAL CIRCUS - QUICK JOEY SMALL

15] ALASDAIR ROBERTS - THE CRUEL WAR

The Weather Mix

Hey again. For this mix, my theme was weather. Initially I thought that there would be an abundance of "rain" songs (there were by the way) and that they'd all be depressing. I think that this mix is kind of a happy little mix instead which was a pleasant surprise. As a side note, I was originally going to put on some favourites of mine (Rain Song: Led Zeppelin, Riders on the Storm: The Doors etc.) but these tracks were all 8 minutes plus. As we've tried to keep these mixes to under an hour, I would have been limited to only a few songs. So, I've opted to pick only tracks around 5 minutes or shorter. I think this mix has more surprises. Enjoy!

1] One Fine Morning - Lighthouse
2] Summer Wind - Frank Sinatra
3] The Wind - Cat Stevens
4] Dust in the Wind - Kansas
5] Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
6] I Love a Rainy Night - Eddie Rabbitt
7] Midnight Rain - Wide Mouth Mason
8] Still Rainin' - Jonny Lang
9] Naked in the Rain - Red Hot Chili Peppers
10] Couldn't Stand the Weather - Stevie Ray Vaughan
11] No Rain - Blind Melon
12] Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles
13] Cold Day in the Sun - Foo Fighters
14] Beautiful Day - U2

Doubles Your Pleasure

So I figure a nice mix is really just supposed to be about making a good musical path to follow. You start somewhere cool, you end up somewhere cool and hopefully you enjoy the way you got from point A to point B. Maybe you even learn something along the way, who knows? I've been rather busy at home the past while, so this week's mix is just really an enjoyable musical path for me. There may be some obvious mile markers along the way, but as the title implies, this mix is all about pleasure. Enjoy.

2. Why? – The Vowels Pt. 2

3. Hymie’s Basement – American Won

Carpool Challenge - "Progress"

As soon as the theme "progress" was suggested, I jumped all over it. I love kitschy optimistic songs about how great the future will be. So, officially, I guess my playlist was the 4th. You'll have to bug Delinquent Driver to get the third. This was my first stab at it though. I'm thinking we could make a side game out of this one to see what the most common name is. I found a lot of Mary's but that was just me. Enjoy!

Deliquent driver...

Gearbox here...I am posting on behalf of Colourways, whose mix is conspicuously missing from the blog. His excuse is that his wife had a baby the week after his "Knights" mix debuted, and he claims that this is distracting. Hopefully one day his mix will go cyber, as it was surprisingly techno...I naturally assumed that we would be assaulted with adventure metal, but he took it in the complete opposite direction. Colourways, if you're out there, please share your artistry!

Inaugural mix

Welcome to Jeecie Peecie, the Great Carpool Challenge! In case you haven't read the sidebar, this blog is a home for the "mixtapes" that come out of our carpool's weekly challenge: The driver must create a mix based on a theme decided by the passengers. The mixer has one week to complete the mix, and he must present it on Friday's commute. I was the first victim, and I was given the theme "Zombies" to work with. Not too daunting, but I added a personal rule that I would not use Metal or Rockabilly songs in the mix, thereby greatly reducing the range of Zombie tunes available to me. Here's what I came up with:

01] The Magics - Zombie Walk
02] Xavier Cugat - Zombie
03] King Flash & Calypso Carnival - Zombie Jamboree
04] The Vampires of Dartmoor - Frankenstein Grusst Alpha 7
05] Daktaris - Voodoo Soul Stew
06] The Zombies - Leave me Be
07] Disco Zombies - Disco Zombies
08] The Rotators - Zombie Tango
09] Fabio Frizzi - Escape From the Flesh Eaters
10] Zombi - Surface to Air
11] Manual Zombie - Woods Off of Interstate 55
12] Zombi - Andromeda
13] Manual Zombie - Justifying to God

All in all it does not sound at all zombiesque. Get it here.
